Overview
The Italian government has published new guidance for UK nationals following the Brexit transition.
What are the Changes?
UK nationals and their dependents may obtain an ‘attestazione di iscrizione anagrafica’ through an in-person appointment if they were residents of Italy before December 31, 2020. UK nationals and their dependents must first obtain an ‘attestazione,’ followed by either a ‘carta di soggiorno,’ which grants a five-year residency, or a ‘carta di soggiorno permanente,’ which is a 10-year residency permit.
Applicants must file their residency applications at the local Police Headquarters or Immigration Police office. UK nationals must submit their ‘attestazione’ and fingerprints to receive a residence permit card.
UK national cross-border workers who are employed or self-employed can request an electronic document with a five-year validity to verify their status. Applicants must show proof of work activity in Italy before December 31, 2020.
An application fee of EUR 30.46 applies for each application.
Looking Ahead
UK nationals should file their residency application by June 30, 2021. UK nationals who are arriving in Italy and beginning work after January 1, 2021, must obtain the same work authorization as non-EU nationals.
