Overview

The Kuwaiti government will no longer accept work permits and residency renewals for expatriates aged 60 or over. The change takes effect on January 1, 2021.

Background

The new restrictions are designed to protect the local Kuwaiti workforce. Expatriates who are ineligible for a work permit and residency renewal due to the age limits have three months to leave Kuwait or apply to remain in the country based on another type of immigration status.

What are the Changes?

Starting in January 2021, expatriates who are employed in Kuwait must either leave the country or find a new qualifying reason to remain in Kuwait when their permits expire. The changes only apply to primary work permit holders. Dependents are exempt.

What Should Employers and Applicants Know?

Employers whose employees will be ineligible for work permit renewal should start making alternative plans to meet their staffing needs by soliciting qualified workers through the local labor market.
