Key Points
- Canada will introduce new eligibility criteria and rules for the granting of post-graduation work permits
Overview
The government of Canada will introduce changes to the eligibility criteria for post-graduation work permit programs. The changes are as follows:
- Beginning September 1, 2024, all international students who begin a study program as part of a curriculum licensing arrangement will no longer be eligible for a post-graduate work permit after graduating
- Graduates in master’s programs and other short graduate-level programs will be eligible to apply for a three-year work permit upon completion of their degree
- Currently, the length of a post-graduation work permit is based solely on the length of an individual’s study program, hindering master’s graduates by limiting the amount of time they must gain work experience and potentially transition to permanent residence
