Key Points
- Australia introduced its new cap for international students that will go into effect on January 1, 2025
Overview
The government of Australia announced that starting January 1, 2025, a cap of 270,000 new international students will be set for the 2025 calendar year, returning to pre-pandemic levels.
The slots will be divided between higher education and vocational education and training (VET) sectors, with publicly funded universities getting 145,000 slots, other institutions 30,000, and the VET sector 95,000.
The government is also encouraging more student housing. Students in standalone English courses, those in transnational education arrangements, and students from the Pacific and Timor-Leste are excluded from the cap. These changes depend on new legislation being passed.
