Key Points

  • Canada introduced additional support measures for certain Haitian nationals who are impacted by the ongoing security situation within the country

Overview

The government of Canada introduced additional temporary support measures for Haitian nationals on May 23, 2024. As a result, Haitians with valid temporary resident status in Canada can apply for a study permit, open work permit, or status extension at no cost. This includes foreign national family members, regardless of nationality, who arrived as temporary residents through assisted departures from Haiti.

The new measures aim to provide immediate relief and stability for Haitian nationals affected by the ongoing crisis in Haiti. By facilitating access to education and employment opportunities, the Canadian government hopes to support the integration and self-sufficiency of these individuals during their stay in Canada. These efforts reflect Canada’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance and its recognition of the urgent needs faced by those displaced by conflict and natural disasters.
