Key Points
- The EU introduced two new proposals that will digitize passports and identification cards for individuals traveling to and from the Schengen Area
Overview
The European Union is developing the EU Digital Travel application, launching in 2030 for EU and non-EU citizens with biometric passports or EU identity cards traveling to or from the Schengen Area. This app will enable travelers to:
- Create digital travel credentials
- Submit travel plans and documents in advance, reducing wait times at borders
- Ensure data protection with user consent and mandatory training for border authorities
The European Council and European Parliament will finalize the proposals to develop technical standards.
The Council also adopted new rules to enhance working conditions for over 28 million digital labor platform workers in the EU. These rules improve transparency in algorithm use, allow workers to contest automated decisions, and help clarify employment status for labor rights access.
EU member countries will have two years to implement these changes after the directive is published in the EU’s Official Journal. Check here for additional resources and to view the EU’s frequently asked question page.
