Key Points
- Lithuania introduced new measures for Ukrainian nationals currently holding temporary protection status
Overview
The government of Lithuania announced that, effective September 1, 2024, Ukrainians in Lithuania who are not temporary protection beneficiaries will need a residence permit to work. Those who cannot return to Ukraine but lack temporary protection can work without a permit. This includes particular visa-exempt Ukrainians and those with Schengen or national visas.
From September 1, 2024, Ukrainians applying for residence permits for work or humanitarian reasons will only be able to work after receiving the permit, except for highly qualified workers, who can work from the application date.
This update signifies a shift in Lithuania’s approach to managing the employment of Ukrainians who are not under temporary protection. The new requirement for a residence permit aims to streamline labor regulations and ensure that all employment activities are adequately documented and regulated. However, it is essential to note that highly qualified workers will benefit from a more expedited process, allowing them to begin work upon submission of their application. Understanding the new application procedures and timelines is crucial for those affected by this change.
