Key Points

  • Norway tightened measures for collective protection for individuals from Ukraine living in certain parts of Norway

Overview

The government of Norway announced that as of September 28, 2024, collective protection will no longer be granted to individuals from Ukraine living in areas deemed safe by Norwegian authorities.

This change only affects those who applied before this date or those already granted collective protection whose residence permits are being extended. It also does not apply to medically evacuated individuals, their relatives, or close family members of those with collective protection.

The safe areas currently identified by Norwegian authorities include:

  • Lviv
  • Volyn
  • Zakarpattia
  • Ivano-Frankivsk
  • Ternopil
  • Rivne

This year, about 10% of applicants for collective protection reported living in these areas. Individuals from safe areas will now need to apply for individual protection, which has stricter requirements.
