  • Salary thresholds now start at £41,700 annually.

Overview

The United Kingdom (UK) has introduced significant changes to the Skilled Worker Visa, effective July 22, 2025, as part of a broader strategy to reduce net migration and raise skill standards. Under the new rules, roles must now meet the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) Level 6 – equivalent to graduate-level qualifications. This change removes over 180 previously eligible occupations that no longer meet the updated criteria.

In addition to the skill threshold, salary requirements have also increased. The general salary floor now starts at £41,700 per year for most occupations. However, flexibility remains for specific categories of applicants. Reduced salary rates may apply to those holding PhDs, new entrants to the labor market, or individuals who have been continuously sponsored since before April 2024.

To mitigate labor shortages in critical sectors, the UK introduced a Temporary Shortage List (TSL). This allows a limited number of sub-degree roles to remain eligible under adjusted salary bands for a transitional period.

These updates reinforce the government’s long-term emphasis on high-skilled migration, economic productivity, and stricter control of immigration pathways.

Looking Ahead

Employers sponsoring skilled workers in the UK should review role classifications and salary benchmarks under the new framework. Transition planning for roles no longer qualifying is essential, and businesses should assess whether candidates may benefit from the Temporary Shortage List or transitional concessions. Monitoring Home Office updates will remain critical as further refinements are expected.
