Overview
The US Department of State (DOS) has provided updates on delays related to passport services, including expedited and routine services and urgent travel appointments.
What are the Changes?
Through the end of October 2021, the DOS estimated a total processing time of eight (8) to eleven (11) weeks for routine services from the time the application was submitted to the time the applicant received a new passport. For expedited services, the DOS is processing passport applications in approximately five to seven weeks, starting from the date that the DOS received applications, not from the date that the application was mailed.
The DOS also noted that passport agencies and centers are still providing urgent appointments and scheduling in-person appointments, but those appointments cannot be guaranteed.
Looking Ahead
To minimize delays and obtain a passport in time to travel, the DOS encourages people to apply four (4) to six (6) months before they plan to leave.
