The government of Portugal replaced the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) on October 29, 2023, with the Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN). The IRN will be responsible for the issuance of the following document types:
- Portuguese Electronic Passports (PEPs)
- Temporary passports, special passports, and passports for foreign nationals
- Review and issue applications for residence permit renewals. This service will only initially be available by prior appointment
What are the Changes?
The government of Portugal officially replaced SEF with IRN on October 29, 2023. The government initially announced plans for this transition in March 2023.
