Overview

The government of Sri Lanka has announced a new permanent residency scheme for individuals of Sri Lankan descent and their dependents. The following individuals will qualify for a Permanent Residence Visa:

  • Persons of Sri Lankan descent or those whose Sri Lankan citizenship has ceased under the law
  • Non-Sri Lankan spouses of Sri Lankan citizens, married for over six months at the time of filing
  • Non-Sri Lankan spouses of deceased Sri Lankan citizens who have not remarried and were married for over six months before the citizen’s death
  • Non-Sri Lankan spouses of individuals of Sri Lankan descent who were married for over six months at the time of filing.
  • Children under 22 years of any qualified individual mentioned

Holders of the Permanent Residence Visa will be allowed to:

  • Enter, stay, and work in Sri Lanka
  • Engage in business and commercial activities
  • Inherit, transfer, or sell property in Sri Lanka
  • Access to education, health, and other public services

This visa offers a pathway to permanent residency for individuals of Sri Lankan descent and their dependents who are ineligible for dual citizenship. Application costs will range from USD 400 to USD 1,000. The implementation date and filing details have yet to be announced.
