Key Points
- New Zealand introduced a new transit visa process and requirements for select foreign nationals
Overview
The government of New Zealand announced that beginning August 12, 2024, nationals needing a Transit Visa for New Zealand must apply online for free. The visa, issued within two weeks, allows a stay of up to 24 hours. This online system simplifies the process and provides real-time tracking. Previously, paper applications were required at Visa Application Centres. However, Chinese nationals applying for Group Transit Visas will still need to use paper applications until an online option is available.
From September 4, 2024, Fijian nationals will be added to the Transit Visa waiver list. They can now apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) instead, which costs NZD 23 online or NZD 17 via a mobile app and is valid for two years. However, Fijian nationals transiting through Wellington or Christchurch on Fiji Airways must apply for a Visitor Visa due to the need for more transfer facilities. Fijian nationals must still apply for the appropriate visa for visits, study, or work in New Zealand.
