Overview
Hong Kong has broadened its e-Channel service for People’s Republic of China (PRC) passport holders, effective June 26, 2025. The update allows eligible travelers transiting through Hong Kong to use automated self-service immigration clearance, streamlining entry and exit procedures.
To qualify, travelers must be at least 11 years old, hold a valid PRC electronic ordinary passport, and be transiting to or from another country or territory. The system, which relies on facial recognition technology, does not require prior enrollment, making it accessible for a wider group of passengers.
This change aims to reduce congestion at immigration counters while improving efficiency for international travelers using Hong Kong as a transit hub. Authorities confirmed, however, that PRC passport holders entering with an “Entry Permit for Hong Kong” issued by overseas Chinese diplomatic or consular missions remain excluded from the update and must continue using staffed counters.
The expansion reflects Hong Kong’s ongoing investment in border technology and its commitment to positioning itself as a seamless gateway for regional and global travel. For related regional insights, see Corporate Immigration Partners’ Asia updates.
Looking Ahead
Airlines and employers coordinating travel through Hong Kong should ensure that eligible PRC passport holders are aware of the expanded e-Channel service. Wider adoption of biometric technology in border processing is expected, and additional updates may further broaden eligibility in the future.
