Overview
The US State Department has announced an extension of National Interest Exceptions (NIEs) for certain travelers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Existing, and newly issued, National Interest Exceptions (NIEs) will be valid for up to 12 months from the date of their initial approval. They will be valid for multiple entries as well, provided they are only used for the purpose under which they were initially granted.
The extension applies to travelers from China, Brazil, Iran, South Africa, Ireland, the UK, India, and the Schengen Area who currently have an approved NIE or who received an NIE in conjunction with their visa application. The NIE extension applies retroactively to all existing NIEs approved in the past year.

Aside from the extension, the protocols for obtaining an NIE will remain the same. Travelers who need visas and believe their travel is in the best interest of the US should contact the nearest US embassy or consulate for details on how to apply.
