Key Points

  • Canada will temporarily remove the limit on the length of study programs for temporary foreign workers who do not currently have a study permit

Overview

The government of Canada will temporarily remove the limit on the length of study programs for temporary foreign workers who do not currently have a study permit. As a result, foreign workers will have the opportunity to seek additional training and education while expanding future possibilities to apply to transition to a permanent residence permit.

The program will remain in effect for the next three years and will apply to full-time or part-time foreign workers who seek to study in Canada until the work permit’s expiration or the new policy. If a foreign worker wishes to study longer than the duration of their work permit, they still need to apply for a study permit.

What are the Changes?

The government of Canada introduced a new temporary measure that will allow certain foreign workers to study in Canada on a work permit. Previously, foreign national students were only permitted to study while working for a maximum period of six months.
