Key Points

  • Ireland extended current suspensions on visa-free travel options for individuals under refugee status

Overview

Ireland’s government extended suspensions on visa-free travel options for individuals under refugee status. As a result, individuals with refugee status will require a visa to travel to Ireland.

However, the visa-waiver arrangements for people fleeing the war in Ukraine remain unaffected.

What are the Changes?

The Irish government extended measures requiring refugee people to obtain a visa before traveling to the country. These extended measures will remain in effect until July 2024. The original extension was put into place in July 2022.

According to the government announcement, this decision was made in response to the fact that many people with refugee status already resided in another European Union (EU) country before traveling to Ireland.

Looking Ahead

The government will review the policy in 12 months. Continue to check the government of Ireland’s website for the latest updates and information.
