The government of Ireland has announced that the new Employment Permits Act will come into effect on September 2, 2024. Key changes include:
- Making the Employment Permit System more adaptable to labor market changes
- Allowing registered subcontractors to access the employment permit system
- Introducing a Seasonal Employment Permit with solid labor rights, starting with a pilot in the horticulture sector in 2025
- Allowing permit holders to transfer to a new employer after a certain period, improving job opportunities and working conditions
The Act also introduces new quotas for employment permits, including 500 permits for home carers and 250 permits for line workers in sectors like home care and utilities in line with government priorities.
According to the government, this Act modernizes employment permits law, benefiting both employers and workers.
