Key Points

  • Germany will begin granting eGate access to UK travelers in phases starting August 2025
  • Frequent travelers will receive initial access, with all UK nationals included after technical upgrades
  • Germany joins Bulgaria, Portugal, and the Czech Republic in providing eGate access to UK citizens

Overview

The United Kingdom (UK) and Germany have reached an agreement to expand eGate access for UK travelers at German border checkpoints. Beginning in late August 2025, the first phase will extend automated entry to frequent UK visitors, reducing wait times and enhancing border efficiency. Full access for all British nationals will be granted once Germany completes the technical updates related to the European Union’s (EU) Entry/Exit System (EES).

Germany becomes the latest EU Member State to allow UK citizens to use automated passport control, joining Bulgaria, Portugal, and the Czech Republic. Estonia is expected to follow with similar access in 2026. This development reflects ongoing efforts to streamline post-Brexit travel processes, particularly for business and frequent travelers who rely on efficient cross-border movement.

The phased rollout will significantly improve the travel experience for UK nationals and support Germany’s broader border modernization efforts under the EES, which integrates biometric data to enhance security and efficiency.

Looking Ahead

Businesses and travel coordinators should closely monitor the rollout of UK eGate access in Germany, particularly if employees frequently travel for assignments or client visits. Early adoption by frequent travelers will help identify process improvements before full implementation. Organizations should also stay informed about upcoming changes in other EU countries as the Entry/Exit System expands.
