Key Points

  • All air entry from the US to Belarus has been suspended for the time being
  • Ticketed travel sales from the US to Belarus have been suspended. This also applies to “interline” travel, meaning tickets that are purchased through one airline but contain flights that are operated by multiple airlines other than the one which it was purchased through

Overview

After the May 23rd, Ryanair flight diversion in Belarus, the US Transportation Department made the decision to suspend all air travel to Belarus. The original route of the Ryanair passenger flight was from Athens to Vilnius but was forced to land in Belarus where the authorities arrested an opposition journalist. This unwarranted act caused the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) to urge the US government to take strong measures to ensure this does not happen again.

Looking Ahead

The actions taken by the US Transportation Department are hoped to be met with apologetic resolution from Belarus so that this is not attempted again in the future.
