Overview
The deadline for converting a Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card to an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card is now extended through December 31, 2020.
Background
The deadline has been extended several times since its implementation to give PIO cardholders more time to submit their applications to covert to an OCI cardholder. Previously, the application deadline was September 30, 2020. The deadline is now extended through the end of the year.
What are the Changes?
The Bureau of Immigration will accept a PIO card as a valid travel document through December 31, 2020, provided it is accompanied by a valid foreign passport. PIO cardholders may need to obtain an appropriate visa from an Indian Mission abroad to travel to India if the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) issues policies that make handwritten PIO cards invalid.
PIO cardholders are encouraged to convert their cards as soon as possible. Cards must be converted before the deadline of December 31, 2020.
